It's also a starting point for the Mount Roberts Trail, a popular path for hiking.

How Starr Hill Got Its Name

Starr Hill is named after a man named Frank Starr. He was a soldier from Maine. Frank Starr came to Juneau around 1880. This was soon after gold was discovered in the area. He tried to find gold himself, but he mostly worked in construction. Frank Starr also claimed land on this hill. This land was close to the road that led to the Silver Bow Basin gold fields.

Early Buildings and Homes

Starr Hill began to grow a lot starting in 1913. A man named Conrad Fries built six small cabins there. These cabins were for miners. They were located on Kennedy Street. Today, these buildings are very important. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places that are protected because of their history.

A few years later, another Juneau businessman, Bernard Behrends, also built homes. He built five smaller cabins. These were also on Kennedy Street. Over time, more homes were built on Starr Hill.

Today, Starr Hill is home to many private houses. These homes are built on the hillside. They offer amazing views of Juneau. You can see the city spread out below. The neighborhood is also a gateway to nature. It has a trailhead for the Mount Roberts Trail. This trail leads up Mount Roberts. It's a great spot for outdoor adventures.
