The State Highway 3-A Bridge at Cibolo Creek is a historic bridge in Texas. It crosses the Cibolo Creek between the cities of Seguin and San Antonio. This bridge is a special type called a Parker through truss bridge. It was built around 1932 and played an important role in early Texas transportation. Today, it is recognized as a significant historical landmark.

History of the Texas State Highway 3-A Bridge

The idea for Texas State Highway 3-A began a long time ago. It was one of the very first state highways planned in Texas in 1917. These early roads helped connect different towns and cities across the state.

Early Highway Routes in Texas

When first planned, the northern part of this road went through places like La Grange and San Marcos. By 1919, the route changed a bit. It moved further north, passing through Bastrop and ending in Austin. This early version of the road was later renamed State Highway 71 by 1933.

Later, the name "Texas State Highway 3-A" was given to a different road. This new route was being built between San Antonio and Waelder. It was an alternate path for the main State Highway 3. To cross the Cibolo Creek on this new route, a special bridge was needed.

Building the Cibolo Creek Bridge

Around 1932, the Parker through truss bridge was built over Cibolo Creek. This bridge helped connect the towns of Seguin and San Antonio. It was an important part of the new highway.

Changes to the Highway System

By 1938, the State Highway 3-A route was mainly the section between Seguin and Waelder. In 1939, this section became the main part of State Highway 3. The original State Highway 3 was then changed to become part of U.S. Route 90. This shows how highway routes can change over time to better serve travelers.
