What the Statue Looks Like
The statue shows Jacques Marquette with a beard and long hair. He is wearing a long, belted robe, which is a type of long coat. A crucifix, a symbol of his faith, can be seen at his belt. In one hand, he holds a map. The bottom part of the statue looks like a rough, rocky base.
Where to Find the Statue
You can find the Jacques Marquette statue in the middle of the Marquette University campus. It is located just east of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a historic building on campus.
How the Statue Was Made
Artist Ronald Knepper was asked to create this statue in May 2004. This process is called being "commissioned." The money for the statue was given by John Madden and his wife, Mary. John Madden is a former student and a member of the university's board of trustees. Curtis L. Carter, who was in charge of the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art on campus, helped manage the project.
