Districts of Austria facts for kids
In Austria, a district is an important local government area. Think of it as a region where many important public services are handled. Austria is divided into larger areas called States of Austria, and then these states are further divided into smaller districts.
What Do District Offices Do?
District offices are like a main help desk for citizens. They help with many everyday things. For example, if you need to get a new Passport, apply for a Driver's license, or even get a Marriage license, you would go to your district office. They also handle permits for public gatherings and work with public health officials to keep everyone safe.
How Many Districts Are There?
As of 2017, Austria has 94 districts. These districts are split into two main types:
- Districts with a district commission: There are 79 of these. They are managed by a special group called a district commission. Each of these districts usually includes about ten to thirty smaller towns or municipalities.
- Statutory cities: There are 15 of these. These are cities that are large enough to act as their own district. This means they handle both city matters and district matters. Outside of official documents, people usually just call them "cities" instead of "districts."
