The Steeple Church is a very old and important church building in Dundee, Scotland. It is located in the western part of a larger historic building called the "City Churches." This church is part of the Church of Scotland.
The "City Churches" are right in the middle of Dundee. They are next to the Overgate shopping centre. This building is special because it has two different church groups meeting inside the same structure. The other church group is Dundee Parish Church (St Mary's), which is at the eastern end of the building.
The Old Steeple: A Historic Tower
The St Mary's Tower is the clock tower at the western end of the City Churches. It is the oldest part of the entire church building. Local people often call it the Old Steeple. Today, Dundee City Council's heritage department takes care of this tower.
The Steeple During Wartime
During a war between Scotland and England, known as the Rough Wooing, the city of Dundee and Broughty Castle were taken over by English forces. In January 1548, an English commander named Thomas Wyndham put a group of 20 soldiers inside the steeple.
He did this with help from Andrew Dudley and a Scottish leader, Lord Gray. These soldiers had weapons like cannons, which were called "saker" and "falcon." They also had smaller guns called "hackbuts of crook."
Church Leaders
The minister who led the church from 2000 to 2013 was the Rev. David M. Clark. He later retired. The current minister, who started in 2014, is the Rev. Robert Calvert.
