Stefania Jabłońska was a famous Polish doctor and professor. She was born on September 7, 1920, with the name Szela Ginzburg. She specialized in dermatology, which is the study of skin and its diseases. Dr. Jabłońska worked at the Medical University of Warsaw for many years. She made very important discoveries about how certain viruses can cause skin cancer. She passed away on May 8, 2017.

Her Important Work

Dr. Jabłońska spent her career studying skin conditions. She was especially interested in how viruses might be linked to serious diseases like cancer.

Discovering the Link to Skin Cancer

In 1972, Dr. Jabłońska came up with an important idea. She suggested that certain types of human papilloma viruses (HPV) could be connected to skin cancer. This was especially true for a rare skin condition called epidermodysplasia verruciformis.

A few years later, in 1978, she worked with a scientist named Gerard Orth. They were at the Pasteur Institute, a famous research center. Together, they made a big discovery. They found a specific type of HPV, called HPV-5, in skin cancer cells. This discovery helped prove her earlier idea. It showed that HPV could indeed play a role in causing some skin cancers.

Awards and Recognition

Because of her groundbreaking work, Stefania Jabłońska received many honors. In 1985, she was given the Robert Koch Prize. This is a very important award for scientists who make big discoveries in medicine.

She also received special awards from her home country and from France. These included the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta from Poland. She also received the National Order of Merit from France. These awards showed how much her work was valued around the world.
