Stefano Arteaga facts for kids
Stefano Arteaga (born Esteban de Arteaga y López; December 26, 1747 – September 30, 1799) was a Spanish writer who focused on theater and music. He spent most of his working life in Italy.
Biography
Stefano Arteaga was a young man and already a Jesuit priest when his religious order was closed down in Spain. This event forced him to leave his home country. He moved to Italy and became a member of the Academy of Padua, a group of scholars.
Later, he lived in Bologna, where Cardinal Albergati hosted him. In Bologna, he met Padre Martini, a famous musician and teacher. Padre Martini encouraged Arteaga to study the history and development of Italian theater.
Arteaga's most important work is called Rivoluzioni del teatro musicale Italiano, dalla suo origine fine al presente. This title means "Revolutions of Italian Musical Theater, from its Origin to the Present." It was published in two volumes in 1783 and is a very important book for understanding music history. A second, larger edition came out in 1785. Arteaga also wrote a book about the rhythm used in ancient times, but it was never published during his life. He passed away in Paris.
