Early Life and Gaming
Stephanie Bendixsen was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Her father was from Argentina and her mother was from the Netherlands. When she was two years old, her family moved to Auckland, New Zealand. They moved back to Australia when she was nine. As a child, Stephanie loved horses and wanted to be a horse rider.
When she was a teenager, her parents did not want her to play video games. So, she would secretly go to her friends' houses to play with them. At 15, Stephanie found an online text-based game called Lensmoor. She enjoyed it so much that she would play late into the night. This made her very tired during school. Her teacher eventually told her parents, and she got help to balance her gaming.
Stephanie also became interested in arts, as it offered her a way to explore her imagination. She studied acting at Western Sydney University. She did not finish her studies there. Instead, she worked full-time at a call centre.
Career in Gaming TV
Hosting Good Game
In 2009, the ABC was looking for new TV presenters for a kids' channel, ABC3. Stephanie tried out for a role. While making her audition video, she found out that the ABC2 video game review show Good Game also needed a host.
Stephanie was a big fan of Good Game. She applied for the job and got it! She joined the show, replacing a previous host. She also became a co-host for Good Game: Spawn Point, a spin-off show on ABC3 made for younger viewers.
On October 26, 2009, Stephanie made her first appearance on Good Game. She joined Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell as a co-host. Some viewers were upset about the change in hosts. Stephanie faced some challenges from viewers because of this. In January 2017, Stephanie announced she was leaving Good Game. After she left, the show ended.
screenPLAY and Back Pocket
In June 2017, Stephanie joined a new video game TV show called screenPLAY on Channel Seven. The show started online on June 19. However, screenPLAY was cancelled on April 30, 2018.
In 2020, Stephanie helped start an online gaming show called Back Pocket. On this show, she and her friends share video game news and play games. The show gets its funding from its audience through a platform called Patreon.
Other Projects
Stephanie used to write a monthly gaming column for Dolly magazine. She also acted in an online mini-series called People You May Know.
In 2016, Stephanie created and hosted her own show called How To Be A Fan With Hex. For this show, she also directed a short film called Dangerous Night. This film was a tribute to the 1982 movie Blade Runner.
She has also written four children's books with her former Good Game co-host, Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell. These books include Dig World (2016), Dragon Land (2016), Speed Zone (2017), and Space Fortress (2018).
In September 2022, Stephanie co-hosted a high school TV series called Ultimate Classroom. She hosted it with Eddie Woo. It was a competition about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
Personal Life
Stephanie's gamer name, "Hex," comes from her love for spellcasters in role-playing games. These characters often have a spell called "Hex," which can curse enemies. Even though she now plays different types of characters, she kept the name "Hex" as her nickname.
In 2012, Stephanie started dating Peter "Pierreth" Burns, who used to work on Good Game. They got engaged in February 2019 and were married on August 17, 2019.
