Early life and interests
Stephanie Bendixsen was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Her father was from Argentina, and her mother was from the Netherlands. When she was two years old, her family moved to Auckland, New Zealand. They lived there until she was nine, then moved back to Australia. When she was a child, Stephanie really liked horses and wanted to be an equestrian, which means someone who rides horses.
As a teenager, Stephanie's parents did not want her to play video games. But she would secretly go to her friends' houses to play with them. When she was fifteen, she found a text-based online game called Lensmoor. She really enjoyed this game. She played it late into the night, sometimes getting very tired in class. Her teacher told her parents, and she got some help to balance her gaming.
Stephanie became interested in arts, as they offered a way to explore new worlds. She studied acting at Western Sydney University. She wanted to get a basic arts degree. However, she did not finish her studies. Instead, she started working full-time at a call centre.
Career in gaming and TV
Working on Good Game
In 2009, the ABC was looking for new TV presenters. They wanted hosts for a new kids' channel called ABC3. Stephanie auditioned for one of these jobs. While making her audition video, she found out that another ABC show, Good Game, needed a presenter. Good Game was a show on ABC2 that reviewed video games.
The ABC asked Stephanie to try out for the Good Game presenter role. She was already a big fan of the show. She applied and got the job, replacing a previous host named Jeremy Ray. Stephanie also became a co-host for Good Game: Spawn Point. This was a spin-off show on ABC3 made for younger audiences.
Stephanie first appeared on Good Game on October 26, 2009. She started on Good Game: Spawn Point on February 20, 2010. She co-hosted with Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell. Some viewers were upset when the original host left. Stephanie faced some unkind comments online because of this.
In January 2017, Stephanie announced she was leaving Good Game. After she left, the show ended.
Working on screenPLAY
In June 2017, Stephanie joined a new video game TV show called screenPLAY. This show was on Channel Seven. It first launched online on June 19. However, screenPLAY was cancelled on April 30, 2018.
Working on Back Pocket
In 2020, Stephanie helped start an online gaming show called Back Pocket. On this show, she and her friends share video game news and play games. The show gets money from its audience through a website called Patreon.
Other projects
Stephanie used to write a monthly gaming column for Dolly magazine. She also acted in an online mini-series called People You May Know.
In 2016, Stephanie created and hosted her own show called How To Be A Fan With Hex. For this show, she also directed a short film called Dangerous Night. This film was a tribute to the 1982 movie Blade Runner.
She has co-written four children's books with her former Good Game co-host, Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell. The books are Dig World and Dragon Land, published in 2016. Speed Zone came out in 2017, and Space Fortress was published in 2018.
In September 2022, Stephanie co-hosted a high-school TV series called Ultimate Classroom. She hosted it with Eddie Woo. It was a competition about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
Personal life
Stephanie's gamer name, "Hex," comes from her love of spellcasters in role-playing games. These characters often have a spell called "Hex." This spell can put a curse on an enemy, causing damage or stopping them from moving. Now, Hex often plays characters who are good at sneaking, like a Rogue or Thief. But she still uses "Hex" as her nickname.
In 2012, Stephanie started dating Peter "Pierreth" Burns. He used to be a production coordinator for Good Game. They got engaged in February 2019. They were married on August 17, 2019.
