Stephen John Laybutt (born 3 September 1977) was a talented Australian soccer player. He was known for playing as a centre back, which is a defensive position in soccer. Stephen played for many different clubs and also represented Australia on the national team. He passed away in January 2024 at the age of 46.

Stephen's Soccer Journey
Stephen Laybutt started his soccer journey at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in 1994. This is a special place where young athletes get top training. After his youth career, he played for several clubs in Australia. These included the Wollongong Wolves and Brisbane Strikers.
Playing Overseas
Stephen also had the chance to play soccer in other countries. He played for Shonan Bellmare in Japan. Later, he moved to Europe, joining Feyenoord in the Netherlands. While in Europe, he also played on loan for RBC Roosendaal (Netherlands) and Lyn Oslo (Norway). Playing overseas helped him gain lots of experience.
Returning to Australia
After his time in Europe, Stephen returned to Australia. He played for Sydney Olympic and later for the Newcastle United Jets. In 2008, he had a serious injury called an achilles tendon rupture. This injury kept him from playing for a while. He finished his career playing for Dandaloo FC.
Playing for Australia
Stephen was a proud member of the Australian national soccer team, often called the Socceroos. He played 15 games for his country between 2000 and 2004. He also played for the Australian Under-23 team from 1998 to 2000.
Life After Soccer
After his professional soccer career, Stephen Laybutt worked at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. He worked in the rehab unit, helping people recover. While working there, he met a patient named Ian Pavey. Stephen showed incredible kindness by donating one of his kidneys to Ian. This act of generosity helped Ian a lot.
