Early Life and Family

Stephen Northleigh was the oldest son of Henry Northleigh. His father passed away in 1694. This meant Stephen inherited some land, but it also came with debts. After his father's death, Stephen became the stepson of Edward Yarde.

When he was 18 years old, Stephen Northleigh went to Exeter College, Oxford. He started his studies there on April 17, 1711. Later, on December 2, 1714, he married Margaret Davie. She was the daughter of Sir William Davie, 4th Baronet, who lived in Creedy, Devon.

Political Career

Stephen Northleigh started his political journey in 1713. During the general election that year, he was elected to represent Totnes. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) without anyone running against him. This was likely because of the influence of his stepfather's family, the Yardes.

He was elected again for Totnes in the 1715 election. However, he did not run for election in the 1722 general election. He served in the House of Commons for a total of 14 years.

Later Life and Legacy

Stephen Northleigh likely passed away in 1731. He and his wife, Margaret Davie, had two daughters. After his death, his property and land went to his daughter, Mary Northleigh. Mary later married a man named John Hippisley Coxe, who was from Ston Easton in Somerset.
