Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Stern's Pickle Works was a famous pickle factory located at 111 Powell Place in Farmingdale, New York. It was the very last pickle factory on Long Island that had been around since the 1800s.

History of the Pickle Factory

The story of this pickle factory began in 1888. A man named Jarvis Andrew Lattin started a business making pickles and sauerkraut in Farmingdale, New York. Many other companies in the area were already making pickles. Jarvis Lattin even built his house right next to his factory.

In 1894, Jarvis Lattin sold his factory to Aaron Stern. After this, the company was called the "Stern and Lattin Pickle Company." Later, in 1914, its name changed again to "Stern and Brauner." The factory was also known as "Stern Pickle Products, Inc." and "Stern's Pickle Works." It stayed at the same address, 111 Powell Place, and kept making pickles until 1985.

Who Was Aaron Stern?

Aaron Stern, who bought the factory, came to the United States in 1893 from Austria. He became a US citizen in 1898. Aaron married Anna in 1910. They had five children: Sidney, Nathan, Joseph, Hilda, and Edythe. Aaron lived in Brooklyn for some time.
