Steuart baronets facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A baronetcy is a special title of honor in the United Kingdom. It's like being a knight, but it's also a bit like being a noble. The title can be passed down through the family, usually from father to eldest son.

The Steuart family had three of these special titles, called baronetcies. These titles were given to three brothers from the same family. They were the first, fourth, and seventh of seven sons of Sir James Steuart. He was a very important person called the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, which is like being the mayor or head of the city. He passed away in 1681.

The Steuart Family and Their Titles

The Steuart family was quite important in Scotland. Many of its members held high positions in law and government. Here's a look at the main people who held these baronet titles:

The Coltness Baronets

The first baronetcy was created in 1698 for Sir Thomas Steuart of Coltness. He was the eldest son of the Lord Provost.

  • Sir Thomas Steuart, 1st Baronet of Coltness (1631–1698): He was the first to hold this title.
    • Sir David Steuart, 2nd Baronet of Coltness (1656–1723): He sold the family estate, Coltness, to his uncle in 1712.
    • Sir Archibald Steuart Denham, 6th Baronet of Coltness (1683–1773): He also inherited another baronetcy, becoming a baronet of Denham of Westshield.

The Goodtrees Baronets

The second baronetcy was created for Sir James Steuart. There's some debate about whether this title was created in 1695 or 1705. He was a top lawyer for the government, known as the Lord Advocate.

  • Sir James Stewart, 1st Baronet (1681–1727): He was the first baronet of Goodtrees.
    • Sir James Steuart of Goodtrees and Coltness, 2nd Baronet (1681–1727): He was the father of Margaret Calderwood.
      • Sir James Steuart of Coltness and Westshield, 3rd Baronet of Goodtrees (1713–1780): He was a famous economist, someone who studies how money and trade work. He also supported a different royal family, known as a Jacobite. He later inherited the Coltness baronetcy in 1773.
        • Sir James Steuart Denham of Coltness, 4th Baronet of Goodtrees (1744–1839): He became a General in the army.

*Sir Henry Steuart Barclay, 5th Baronet of Goodtrees (1765–1851): He was also the 9th Baronet of Coltness.

The Allanbank Baronets

The third baronetcy was created in 1687 for Sir Robert Steuart of Allanbank. He was the youngest of the Lord Provost's seven sons.

  • Sir Robert Steuart of Allanbank (1643–1707): He was the first baronet of Allanbank.
    • Sir John Steuart of Allanbank, 2nd Baronet (c.1685–1753)
      • Sir John Steuart of Allanbank, 3rd Baronet (1714–1796)
        • Sir John Steuart of Allanbank, 4th Baronet (1754–1817)

*Sir John James Stuart of Allanbank FRSE, 5th Baronet (1779–1849): He was a well-known artist.

What Happened to the Baronetcies?

Today, all three of these Steuart baronetcies are considered dormant. This means that no one is currently using the titles. It's very likely that they have become extinct, meaning there are no direct family members left to inherit them.

However, if there is a distant branch of the Allanbank family that is still around, they would have inherited the Allanbank title in 1849. They would also have inherited the other two titles in 1851.
