Steve Peat, often called "Peaty" or "Sheffield Steel," is a famous British professional downhill mountain biker. He was born on June 17, 1974, in Chapeltown, Sheffield, England. Before becoming a full-time athlete, he worked as a plumber. Peat is known for his amazing career in mountain biking, winning many races and championships around the world. He is married to Adele Croxon and has two sons, Jake and George.

Steve Peat's Early Career

Steve Peat started his biking journey with the Saracen team. He then moved to Team MBUK in the mid-1990s. Later, he rode for GT Bicycles and the Orange team. From 2002 to 2005, he rode for Orange, even winning a World Cup round in Fort William, Scotland in 2005.

Joining Santa Cruz Syndicate

In 2006, Peat joined the Santa Cruz Syndicate team. This was a big move for him. He finished first overall in the season that year. He still races for Santa Cruz Syndicate today.

Major Wins and Achievements

Steve Peat has had many incredible wins throughout his career. He is one of the most successful downhill mountain bikers ever.

World Cup Success

On May 10, 2009, Peat won the La Bresse downhill World Cup round. This was his 16th World Cup win, tying him with another legend, Nicolas Vouilloz. Just one week later, on May 17, 2009, he won again in Vallnord. This made him the most successful male downhill mountain bike racer by number of wins at that time. His teammate, Greg Minnaar, has since broken this record.

World Championship Title

Peat had come in second place at the Mountain Bike World Championships several times. He was second in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2008. But on September 6, 2009, his dream came true. He finally won the World Championships in Canberra, Australia. He finished just 0.05 seconds ahead of his teammate Greg Minnaar.

Other Important Wins

Steve Peat has also been crowned World Cup champion three times: in 2002, 2004, and 2006. He has also won the Lisboa Downhill race in Lisbon, Portugal, eight times. This shows how consistent and dominant he was in the sport.

Beyond Racing

Steve Peat is involved in mountain biking even when he's not racing.

Clothing Design and Youth Support

He helps design and make special riding clothes for Royal Racing. He is also part owner of the company. Peat also works with young cyclist academies. He strongly supports getting more young people involved in mountain biking.

Digital and Public Recognition

After winning the World Championship, he released his own game. It's called 'Steve Peat – Downhill Mountain Biking' and is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. In 2016, Steve Peat was honored in his hometown. He was added to Sheffield's 'walk of fame' outside Sheffield Town Hall. A book about his life is also planned to be released in October 2021.
