Steve Peat (born June 17, 1974) is a famous British professional downhill mountain biker. He is known by the nicknames "Peaty" and "Sheffield Steel," because he comes from the city of Sheffield, England, which is famous for making steel. Before becoming a world-famous biker, he worked as a plumber.

Downhill mountain biking is an exciting sport where riders race down steep, rough tracks as fast as they can. Steve Peat is one of the most successful riders in the history of the sport. He is married to Adele Croxon and they have two sons, Jake and George.

A Career on Two Wheels

Steve's journey to the top wasn't always easy. He started his career riding for the Saracen team. Later, he joined other famous teams like Team MBUK, GT Bicycles, and Orange bikes.

In 2006, he joined the Santa Cruz Syndicate team, where he had some of his biggest successes. He is still part of this team today as a rider and ambassador for the sport.

Becoming a Champion

For a long time, Steve was known for coming very close to winning the biggest race of all, the Mountain Bike World Championships. He won the silver medal four times in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2008.

Finally, on September 6, 2009, in Canberra, Australia, Steve Peat became the World Champion. He won the race by an incredibly small amount of time—just 0.05 seconds ahead of his teammate, Greg Minnaar! It was a huge moment in his career.

World Cup Success

The World Cup is a series of races held all over the world. Steve Peat was the overall World Cup champion three times, in 2002, 2004, and 2006. This means he was the most consistent and best rider throughout the entire season.

In 2009, he won two World Cup races in a row. His second win made him the most successful male downhill racer of all time with 17 World Cup victories. This record was later broken by his teammate from South Africa, Greg Minnaar.

Life Beyond Racing

Steve Peat is more than just a racer. He has used his knowledge of the sport to help design and create special clothing for mountain bikers. He is a part-owner of a company called Royal Racing.

He is also passionate about helping young people get into mountain biking. He works with youth academies to help train the next generation of riders.

Because of his amazing career, Steve was given a star on the "walk of fame" outside Sheffield Town Hall in 2016. In 2021, a book about his life and career was released. He even has his own video game for phones and tablets called 'Steve Peat – Downhill Mountain Biking'.
