About Steven Bilsland
Early Life and Education
Alexander Steven Bilsland was born in 1892. He was the oldest son of Sir William Bilsland, who was a Baronet and the Lord Provost of Glasgow. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. Alexander studied at St John's College, Cambridge, a famous university.
Business and Military Career
Steven Bilsland became the head of Bilsland Brothers Ltd, a baking company in Glasgow. His uncle, James Bilsland, had started this company. He also led the Scottish National Trust Ltd, which helps protect Scotland's natural and historical places.
During his life, Steven Bilsland also served in the military. He was a Captain in the army. Later, in 1938, he became an Honorary Colonel for a military group called the 8th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). This shows his dedication to public service.
Public Service and Honors
In 1921, Steven Bilsland received the title of Baronet after his father passed away. This meant he was then known as Sir Steven Bilsland. Later, in 1950, he was given an even higher honor. He became a "Baron," which is a type of noble title, and was then called Baron Bilsland. This honor was given to him because of his important "public services in Scotland."
In 1955, he received another very special award: he was made a Knight of the Thistle. The Order of the Thistle is one of the highest honors given in Scotland.
Family and Later Life
Lord Bilsland married Amy Janet Colville in 1922. They did not have any children. He passed away in December 1970, when he was 78 years old. Because he had no children, his special titles of Baronet and Baron ended with him.
