The Stiff Gins are an Indigenous Australian band from Sydney. They make music that features acoustic sounds and beautiful harmonies. People often compare their music to another band called Tiddas. The band started in 1999 when Emma Donovan, Nardi Simpson, and Kaleena Briggs met while studying music at the Eora Centre.
The band's name, Stiff Gins, has a special meaning. The word gin was sometimes used in a disrespectful way for Aboriginal women. However, it was also a word in the Dharug language meaning "woman" or "wife." By adding the word stiff, the band wanted to create a strong and proud meaning: "strong black woman." This name choice led to some discussions, but it shows the band's powerful message.
The Stiff Gins quickly gained recognition. They won a Deadly Award in 2000 for "Most Promising New Talent." In 2001, their song "Morning Star" won the award for "Best Single Release."
