However, it was also a word in the Dharug language meaning "woman" or "wife." By adding the word stiff, the band wanted to create a strong and proud meaning: "strong black woman." This name choice led to some discussions, but it shows the band's powerful message.

The Stiff Gins quickly gained recognition. They won a Deadly Award in 2000 for "Most Promising New Talent." In 2001, their song "Morning Star" won the award for "Best Single Release."
