The Stiles's tapaculo (Scytalopus stilesi) is a small bird from a group called tapaculos. These birds live in the Neotropical areas, which include Central and South America. Scientists officially described this bird as a new species in 2005.

About Stiles's Tapaculo

This bird lives in the mountain forests of Colombia. You can find it high up in the Andes mountains. It lives at altitudes between 1,420 and 2,130 meters above sea level.

Where It Lives

Stiles's tapaculo has been found in 21 different places. These places are all in the northern part of the Central Mountain Range in Colombia. Even though it lives in a small area, it is a common bird there. It likes to stay in the lower parts of the forest, close to the ground.

Its Conservation Status

When the Stiles's tapaculo was first discovered, scientists thought it might be "near threatened." This means they worried it could become endangered soon. However, they later found many more of these birds. So, in 2007, it was listed as a species of "least concern" on the IUCN Red List. This means it is not in danger right now.

How It Was Discovered

People first saw this bird in the 1990s. But it was Niels Krabbe, a bird expert, who suspected it was a new species. He listened to recordings of their songs. He noticed that the Stiles's tapaculo's song was much faster and had a lower sound. This was different from the song of a similar bird, the Ecuadorian tapaculo (S. robbinsi).

Why the Name?

The Stiles's tapaculo was named to honor Frank Gary Stiles. He is an ornithologist, which is a scientist who studies birds. Frank Gary Stiles did a lot of important research on Neotropical birds in the 1980s and 1990s.
