History of the Stithians Show
The Stithians Show has a long and interesting past, full of changes and growth.
Where the Show Has Been Held
It's not totally clear where the very first shows took place. Old records from 1838 mention "Churchtown," which is now where the Stithians Centre and village school are located. Later, in 1885, the show was held in a field next to the Seven Stars hotel.
For many years, the show was held in fields that were part of Ennis and Carbis Farm. From 1938, the playing fields in the middle of the village became the main spot. As the show grew bigger, they started using more land. However, because the rent for this land went up, the show had to find a new home in 1992.
In 1992, the Stithians Agricultural Association was lucky enough to buy about 65 acres (which is about 263,000 square meters) of land at Kennal Farm. This is where the show is held today! Even though it's now outside the main village, this new site has much better parking, easier access, and its own water and electricity. This means the show can run more smoothly and be more independent.
Important Dates in Show History
The Stithians Show began in 1834 and has been held almost every year since then.
- It was paused for three years during World War I (1916-1918).
- It was also paused for five years during World War II (1940-1944).
- In 2001, there was no show because of a big outbreak of foot and mouth disease across the country.
- More recently, in 2020 and 2021, the show was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. During that time, the showground was even used as a vaccination center to help people stay healthy!
