The Story of Stone Hall
Stone Hall was built in 1918 for a family named Cantrell. The family included Dempsey Weaver Cantrell and Nora Johnson Cantrell. They got married in 1907.
Who Were the Cantrells?
Nora Johnson Cantrell was a talented writer. She was even named the Poet Laureate for the Tennessee Federation of Women's Clubs in 1939. This was a special honor for her poetry.
Dempsey Weaver Cantrell was a successful businessman. He started his own company in 1903. It was called Southern Woodenware Company. His company sold paper goods to other businesses.
Why They Built Stone Hall
Before Stone Hall, the Cantrell family lived in a different part of Nashville. They lived in a house on Russell Street. In 1916, a big fire happened in East Nashville. Their house was very close to the fire.
After this, the Cantrells decided to move. They wanted to build a new home in a safer area. Nora Cantrell's father owned some land in the Donelson area. So, the family chose to build their new house there. They hired George Waller, who designed the amazing Stone Hall.
