The Stone House is a very old and special house found on Burnham Road in Bridgton, Maine, USA. It was built a long time ago, between 1828 and 1830. This house is unique because it's a "Cape style" home made from stone, using an old English building method. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's an important historical building worth protecting.

About the Stone House

The Stone House is located in a quiet, countryside part of southern Bridgton. You can find it on the north side of Burnham Road. It's just a short distance west of where Burnham Road meets Willis Park Road.

What Does It Look Like?

The house sits on land that slopes downwards. This means it looks like a single story from the front (south side) but has two stories on the back (north side). It is built from large, flat pieces of granite stone. These stones were dug by hand from a nearby quarry. The top half-story of the house is made with a wooden frame.

The roof has a pointed shape, called a gabled roof. There is a brick chimney right in the middle of the house. Newer parts, called "ells," have been added to the west side of the building. The front of the house has five sections, or "bays," for windows and doors. The main front door is in the center, with tall, narrow windows on either side.

Why Was It Built?

The Stone House was built between 1828 and 1830 by a man named John Mead, Sr. He was from England and moved to this area in the early 1800s. In 1828, a very strong windstorm sadly destroyed his old house. After that, he decided to build a new house that would be strong enough to stand up to any future storms.

This house is the only one known in western Maine that uses these special English stone-building methods. John Mead was also known for something else unusual in Maine. He planted mulberry trees to raise silkworms. Silkworms eat mulberry leaves to make silk.
