Stoneville, South Dakota facts for kids
Stoneville is a small place in South Dakota, a state in the United States. It's not a city or a town with its own local government. Instead, it's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it's managed by the larger Meade County government.
The Story of Stoneville
The community of Stoneville got its start a long time ago. In 1903, a post office was opened there. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the people of Stoneville for many years, finally closing in 1965.
There are two main ideas about how Stoneville got its name:
- Some people think it was named because many of the early houses were built using stone. Imagine a whole community where homes were made of strong, natural rock!
- Others believe the name came from one of the very first people to settle there, a person named L. N. Stone. It was common for new places to be named after important early settlers.
