Storage facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Storage is all about keeping things safe and the places where you keep them. Think about where you put your toys, clothes, or even your school books – that's storage! It helps us keep things organized and ready for when we need them again.

There are many different ways and places to store things, from small containers to huge buildings.

Storage at Home

At home, we use lots of things to store our belongings. These are often pieces of furniture designed to hold different items.

Furniture for Your Stuff

  • Bookcases are shelves for holding books.
  • Cabinets and cupboards are like boxes with doors, perfect for dishes, food, or games.
  • Chests are big boxes, often used for blankets or toys.
  • Desks often have drawers to store pens, paper, and other school supplies.
  • Refrigerators keep food cold and fresh.
  • Sideboards are long, low cabinets, often used in dining rooms to store dishes or serving items.

Special Rooms for Storage

Some parts of our homes are made just for storage:

  • A storage room or closet is a small room or space for keeping things like clothes, cleaning supplies, or holiday decorations.
  • A basement or cellar is an underground room, often used for storing things that aren't needed every day, like old furniture or canned goods.
  • An attic is a space just under the roof, also used for storing items, especially those you don't use often.

Containers for Keeping Things

Containers are super important for storage. They come in all shapes and sizes!

Small Containers

  • Boxes, bottles, and cans are common containers for food, drinks, or small items.
  • Food storage containers like those from brands such as Tupperware keep your leftovers fresh.

Large Containers

  • Shipping containers (also called intermodal containers) are huge metal boxes used to transport goods all over the world by ships, trains, and trucks. They keep cargo safe during long journeys.
  • A magazine can also mean a place or container where ammunition (like bullets) is stored safely.

Storing Liquids and Energy

Storage isn't just for solid objects; we also store liquids and even electricity!

Storing Liquids

  • A reservoir is a large, artificial lake built to store water, often for drinking or to generate electricity.
  • A storage tank is a big container for holding liquids like oil, gas, or chemicals.
  • Dry cask storage is a special way to store used nuclear fuel safely. It uses strong, sealed containers to hold radioactive waste.

Storing Energy

  • A capacitor is a device that can store an electric charge and release it very quickly.
  • A battery stores chemical energy and turns it into electrical energy to power your devices, like phones or remote controls.

Storing Information

In today's world, storing information is just as important as storing physical things.

Digital Storage

  • A storage medium is anything that can hold digital information, like a computer file.
  • Computer storage includes devices like hard drives and computer memory (RAM). These are where your computer keeps all its programs, photos, videos, and documents.
  • Store and forward is a way that information, like emails or messages, is sent. It means the information is temporarily stored at different points along its journey before reaching its final destination.

Stored Knowledge and Memories

  • An archive is a collection of important records or historical documents, often kept in a special place for future reference.
  • Books are amazing storage devices for knowledge, stories, and ideas that have been passed down through generations.
  • Your own memory is a powerful storage system inside your brain, holding all your experiences, facts, and skills!
