A story is a way we share information, ideas, or events with others. It can be something real that happened, or something made up from imagination. Stories are important because they help us learn, understand different feelings, and connect with people from all over the world.

What is a Story?
A story can mean different things depending on how we use the word. Here are some common ways we talk about stories:
Telling About Real Events
Sometimes, a story is simply telling someone about something that really happened. For example, if you tell your friend about your day at school, you are telling a story.
- Bob read the children a story about how he learned to ride a bike.
- Mary told John the story of her life, sharing all the important things that happened to her.
Stories in News and Media
When you watch the news or read a newspaper, you often hear about "stories." In this case, a story is a report about recent events or important information.
- Did you see the story about the new space mission on page 12 of the newspaper?
- News channels often have special stories about interesting people or places.
Made-Up Stories (Fiction)
Many times, a story is something that is not real. These are often called fiction. People create these stories to entertain, teach lessons, or explore ideas.
- Little Johnny said he was a millionaire, but he's not; it was only a story he made up for fun.
- Books, movies, and plays are full of fictional stories that take us to different worlds. You can learn more about this at fiction.
Stories as Building Levels
In American English, the word "story" can also mean a level or floor of a building. For example, a two-story house has two floors.
- The house has eight stories, making it a very tall building.
- In British English, this is usually called a "storey" (with an 'e').
