Story C. Landis is an American scientist who studies the brain and nervous system. She was a very important leader at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is a big group that helps with health research in the United States. From 2003 to 2014, she was the director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). This institute focuses on understanding and treating brain and nerve problems. Dr. Landis worked at NINDS starting in 1995. In 2007, she was also chosen to lead the NIH Stem Cell Task Force. This group looks into how special cells called stem cells can be used for health.

Early Life and Education

Story C. Landis went to Wellesley College and earned her first degree in biology in 1967. After that, she continued her studies at Harvard University. There, she earned both her Master's Degree and her Ph.D. Her Ph.D. research at Harvard focused on how the cerebellum, a part of the brain, develops in mice. After getting her Ph.D., she continued her research at Harvard. She studied how nerve cells, called neurons, can change and adapt.

Her Work and Research

Dr. Landis taught and did research at Harvard Medical School until 1985. She was a professor in the Department of Neurobiology, where she studied the brain. In 1985, she moved to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. There, she continued her work as a teacher and researcher.

Later, Dr. Landis joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She became the director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in 2003. She led this important institute until October 2014. NINDS helps fund research to understand and treat brain and nervous system disorders.

Dr. Landis is recognized as a top scientist by several important groups. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. These groups choose scientists who have made big contributions to their fields. She is also part of the American Neurological Association, which is a group for doctors and scientists who study the nervous system.
