What Happens in the Story
A New Visitor Arrives
The adventure begins when Theo Bass comes to Pacific Grove, California. Theo is the cousin of Tyco Bass, a character from the first book. He visits the two main boys, Chuck and David.
Theo has traveled all over the world for many years. When he learns about the amazing Mushroom Planet, he decides to rebuild the boys' lost spaceship. He wants to return to the planet, which he believes is where his family originally came from.
An Unexpected Guest
Before Theo arrived, Chuck and David had written a letter. They invited a university professor to give a talk to their young astronomers' club. The professor was away when the letter arrived. Instead, his ambitious young assistant, Horatio Peabody, decided to come in his place.
Horatio Peabody ends up secretly traveling to the Mushroom Planet. He causes a lot of trouble there! This book talks more about big ideas than the first one. Peabody believes the Mushroom Planet should be explored and used "for the good of science." He also wants personal fame.
Trouble on the Mushroom Planet
Mr. Peabody does something very disrespectful on the Mushroom Planet. This action almost puts everyone in danger. He generally annoys and scares the peaceful people of the planet.
However, by the end of the book, Horatio Peabody learns an important lesson. He realizes that his scientific beliefs were too proud and bossy. The situation calms down, and things return to normal until the next book in the series.
