Flowers and candles adorn the Isidor and Ida Straus Memorial on April 15, 2012, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Straus Park is a small, pretty park located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan, a famous part of New York City. You can find it where three streets meet: Broadway, West End Avenue, and 106th Street.

This park is a special place that honors Ida Straus and Isidor Straus. They were a married couple who sadly passed away together when the famous ship, the RMS Titanic, sank. Isidor Straus was a very important person; he was a congressman (meaning he helped make laws for the country) and also a co-owner of the well-known department store, Macy's.

What Makes Straus Park Special?

The main thing you'll notice in Straus Park is a beautiful bronze statue. It was created in 1913 by an American artist named Augustus Lukeman. The statue shows a nymph (a mythical nature spirit) looking out over a peaceful area of water. This statue is a tribute to Ida and Isidor Straus.

The Story of Ida and Isidor Straus

Ida and Isidor Straus were known for their deep love for each other. When the Titanic was sinking, Ida was offered a spot on a lifeboat. However, she chose to stay with her husband, Isidor, because she didn't want to be separated from him. This brave and loving choice is remembered on the memorial.

A special message is carved into the memorial: "Lovely and pleasant were they in their lives and in their death they were not parted." This quote comes from an old book called Second Samuel in the Bible. It perfectly describes their strong bond.

Where the Strauses Lived

Before the Titanic tragedy, the Strauses lived very close to where the park is now. Their house was at 2747 Broadway, between 105th and 106th Streets. This was just one block south of the memorial that now honors them.

History of Straus Park

The land where Straus Park sits today is a small, triangular shape. It was bought by New York City in 1895. At first, it was called Schuyler Square. Later, in 1907, its name was changed to Bloomingdale Square.

Park Renovations and Care

Between 1995 and 1997, Straus Park got a big makeover. It was made larger by adding 15 feet from West End Avenue. The Straus family also set up a special fund to help take care of the park. This money helped turn an old, neglected reflecting pool in front of the statue into a lovely garden filled with plants.

Today, a group called the Friends of Straus Park helps make sure the park stays beautiful. They raise money to keep it maintained and to plant colorful flowers each season.
