Early Life and Learning Music
Subbaraya Sastri was born in 1803. He was the second son of Syama Sastri. He started learning music from his father. His father, Syama Sastri, later asked another great musician, Tyagaraja, to teach his son. So, Subbaraya went to learn from Tyagaraja.
He also had a chance to learn a few krithi (musical compositions) from Muthuswami Dikshitar. This meant he learned from all three of the "Trinity" of Carnatic music. Subbaraya Sastri also studied Hindustani music. He learned from Meru Goswami, a musician who worked in the Thanjavur palace. He also learned from Ramadas Swami, who lived near Kumbakonam.
