Subodh Markandeya is a well-known Indian lawyer, author, and activist for justice. He mainly works at the Supreme Court of India, which is the highest court in the country. He also appears in many other high courts.

Mr. Markandeya has served as a lawyer for the Government of India. He has also represented important organizations like the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the State of Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court once asked him to be an 'amicus curiae', which means "friend of the court." This happened during a big investigation into Tihar Jail from 1982 to 1985.

His Education

Subodh Markandeya studied science at Nizam's College, earning his BSc degree in 1956. He then went on to study law at Osmania University Law College, getting his LL.B. degree in 1959. Later, in 1963, he earned a master's degree in law. His master's studies focused on important areas like constitutional law and international law.

His Legal Career

Subodh Markandeya began his legal journey by working with Ramkrishen Rao Nimbalkar. Mr. Nimbalkar was a leading lawyer in Hyderabad. Markandeya learned a lot about civil law, which deals with disagreements between people or groups.

In 1965, he had the chance to work with Jagdish Swarup, a famous lawyer at the Allahabad High Court. Here, he improved his skills in many types of law. He also started taking on his own cases for the Supreme Court of India. These cases often involved laws about workers and public services. In 1968, he moved to the Supreme Court to train as an Advocate-on-Record (AOR). He officially became an AOR in 1970. After this, he worked on many important and famous cases from all over India.

In 1977, the Central Government appointed him as their standing counsel. This meant he represented the government in major cases. He was involved in cases that helped shape important laws. The Supreme Court also asked him to be a "friend of the court" in the "Tihar Jail Enquiry" Case. His work in this case led to big changes in jails. It also helped protect the human rights of prisoners.

During a challenging time known as the Emergency, Mr. Markandeya worked with R. P. Goel. Together, they helped many people who were held without trial. Their efforts brought relief and freedom to hundreds across India. He also served as a lawyer for the Allahabad High Court and the State of Uttar Pradesh. He represented many public organizations and universities.
