Mr. Markandeya has worked as a special lawyer for the Government of India and for big organizations like the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). He also represented the State of Uttar Pradesh and many other government groups. The Supreme Court once asked him to be an 'amicus curiae', which means 'friend of the court'. This happened during an important investigation into the Tihar Jail from 1982 to 1985.
Education and Learning
Subodh Markandeya studied science and earned his BSc degree in 1956 from Nizam's College. He then went on to study law at Osmania University Law College (OULC), getting his first law degree (LL.B.) in 1959. He continued his studies and received a master's degree in law in 1963. His master's focused on constitutional law and international law.
His Career as a Lawyer
Subodh Markandeya started his legal career by working with Ramkrishen Rao Nimbalkar. Mr. Nimbalkar was a top lawyer in Hyderabad and a leader of the local bar association. Markandeya learned a lot about civil law during this time.
In 1965, he got a chance to work with Jagdish Swarup, a famous lawyer at the Allahabad High Court. Here, Markandeya became very skilled in different types of law, including civil law and laws about the government. He also started taking on his own cases for the Supreme Court of India, especially in areas like labor laws. In 1968, he moved to the Supreme Court to train as an Advocate-on-Record (AOR). He officially became an AOR in 1970 and worked on many important cases from all over India.
In 1977, the Central Government appointed him as their standing counsel. This meant he represented the government in major cases. He was also appointed by the Supreme Court as an amicus curiae (friend of the court) in the "Tihar Jail Enquiry" Case. This case was very important because it led to big changes in jails and helped protect the human rights of prisoners.
Mr. Markandeya also filed a petition in the Supreme Court about the resignations of MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) concerning the issue of Telangana. He argued that their resignations should be accepted.
During a period known as the Emergency, he worked with another lawyer, R. P. Goel, to help many people who had been held without trial across India, especially in Uttar Pradesh. Markandeya also served as a lawyer for the Allahabad High Court, the State of Uttar Pradesh, and many of its public organizations and universities.
