How Sudden Coffee Started
Sudden Coffee was created by Joshua Zloof and Kalle Freese. They noticed that many people wanted good quality, freshly brewed coffee. But it was hard to find this kind of coffee easily, especially outside big cities. So, they decided to make it simple for everyone to enjoy "specialty coffee."
The founders got help from some experienced people. These advisors included Caterina Fake, who helped start Flickr, and Jyri Engeström, who co-founded Jaiku.
In 2017, Sudden Coffee joined a special program called Y Combinator. This program helps new companies grow. Sudden Coffee was only the second food company to be accepted into this program.
When it first began, Sudden Coffee offered a monthly subscription service. This meant customers could get their coffee delivered regularly to their homes.
How Sudden Coffee Was Made
Sudden Coffee used high-quality coffee beans. These beans came from specific places and were roasted by special coffee companies. Some of these roasters included Equator Coffee and Intelligentsia Coffee.
The Brewing Process
First, the coffee beans were brewed into liquid coffee. Sudden Coffee had a unique way of brewing. They brewed the coffee at a lower temperature, around 85-90 degrees Celsius. This was different from how regular instant coffee is made. Brewing at a lower temperature helped prevent the coffee from becoming too strong or bitter. It also helped keep the natural sweet, fruity, and tangy flavors of the coffee.
Freeze-Drying and Packaging
After brewing, the liquid coffee was freeze-dried. This process turns the liquid coffee into a dry powder or crystals. They did this in small amounts to make sure the quality was always good. Finally, the instant coffee was carefully packed by hand. It was put into recyclable containers to keep it fresh.
