History of Summit
Summit got its name because it sits on a high point, like a "summit," between two valleys: the Parowan Valley and Cedar Valley.
Before people settled there, the land near Summit Creek was used for grazing animals from the town of Parowan. In the spring of 1858, Samuel T. Orton and other families moved to Summit Creek. They started farming and raising animals like bees, sheep, and cattle.
By July 1877, a local church group, called an LDS ward, was formed in Summit. Sylvanus C. Hulet was the first leader of this group. At first, children in Summit went to school in a simple one-room log cabin. Later, the school was improved to a concrete building. From 1920 to 1936, students up to the seventh grade attended a two-room brick schoolhouse.
