Suñer I (pronounced Soon-YER the First), also known as Sunyer or Suniario, was an important leader in a region called Pallars. He was the Count of Pallars from 948 until he passed away in 1010. He also became the Count of Ribagorza because of his marriage.
About Suñer I
Suñer I was the son of Count Lope I of Pallars and his wife, Goltregoda of Cerdanya.
He had two older brothers, Count Borrell I of Pallars and Count Raymond II of Pallars.
Suñer took over as Count after his father and his uncle, Isarn, Count of Pallars. For a while, Suñer ruled Pallars alongside his brothers. His brothers passed away in 995.
From 995 until his own death in 1010, Suñer ruled Pallars with his nephew, Ermengol I of Pallars. Ermengol was the son of Suñer's brother, Borrell I.
Suñer's Family
Suñer I was married two times.
His first wife was Ermengarda, who was also his sister-in-law. She had previously been married to Suñer's brother, Borrell. Suñer and Ermengarda had two sons: Raymond III of Pallars Jussà and William II of Pallars Sobirà. They also had a daughter named Ermengarda.
Suñer's second wife was Countess Toda of Ribagorza. Toda was the daughter of Suñer's cousin, Raymond II, Count of Ribagorza.
