The Superintendent's Residence at the Utah State Hospital is a special old house in Provo, Utah, United States. It's located at the Utah State Hospital. This house is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This list helps protect important buildings across the country.

This house was built in 1934. It has a classic look called Colonial Revival style. It's one of many buildings constructed in Utah during the 1930s. These buildings were part of big government programs like the WPA and other New Deal efforts. These programs helped people find jobs during a tough time. The house was also named a historic landmark by Provo City in 1996.

The 1930s were a very difficult time in American history. This period is known as the Great Depression. Many people lost their jobs and money. Utah was hit especially hard during this time. In 1933, about 36 out of every 100 people in Utah did not have a job. This was one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

Because Utah faced such big problems, the state received a lot of help from the national government. The government started programs to create jobs and build new things. These programs were part of what was called the New Deal. They helped build many different structures, like fire stations, city halls, schools, and courthouses.

The Superintendent's Residence is important because it shows how these New Deal programs helped Utah. It is an example of the many buildings that were constructed to give people work and improve communities during the Great Depression.

What the House Looks Like

The Superintendent's Residence was built in 1934. It is a beautiful house made of brick and painted white. It has one and a half stories. The house's design mixes two styles: Colonial Revival and PWA Moderne.

The house has a pointed roof, called a gable roof. It has a long main part with smaller, one-story sections on each side. Above the front door, there is a fancy decoration called a cornice and frieze. Above these, you can see a balcony. Some windows on the east side of the house open outwards, like a door. Other windows on the west side have a curved, fan-like shape above them. The house is still in good condition today.
