Susan Allix facts for kids
Susan Allix (born in 1943) is a talented British artist. She is famous for her amazing work with books, often called "book arts." She creates books from start to finish, doing everything herself!
Early Life and Learning
Susan Allix went to the Guildford School of Art to study painting. Later, she earned a special degree (an MA) in printmaking from the Royal College of Art. She even studied engraving in Italy! She was able to do this because she won a special award called the Prix de Rome scholarship.
Her Artistic Career
Susan Allix's books are very special because she handles every single step of making them. This includes coming up with the idea, designing the pages, choosing the fonts (typography), printing the words and pictures, and even binding the books or making special boxes for them.
She prints her books in small numbers, called "limited editions." She uses old-fashioned printing methods like letterpress for the text. For illustrations, she uses techniques like etchings, linoleum cuts, woodcuts, and a stenciling method called pochoir. She also adds hand-painted details to her books.
The paper she uses for her books is often collected during her travels or chosen very carefully for a specific project. It can be anything from paper made in factories to beautifully patterned sheets, or even handmade fine art papers.
Susan Allix creates her unique books under the name "the Willow Press."
Her amazing work can be found in many important collections around the world. These include the U.K. Government Art Collection, the Yale Center for British Art, the Smithsonian Libraries, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
