Susan Hamilton, Duchess of Hamilton (born May 14, 1786 – died May 27, 1859), was an important figure in British society. She was born as Susan(na) Euphemia Beckford. She became a duchess when she married Alexander Hamilton, who later became the 10th Duke of Hamilton. She was also the mother of the 11th Duke.
Early Life and Family
Susan was born in a beautiful place called Château La Tour, in Vevay, Switzerland. Her father was William Thomas Beckford, a well-known art collector. He lived at Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran. Susan's mother was Lady Margaret Gordon. Her grandfather, William Beckford, was once the Lord Mayor of London.
Marriage and Children
Susan Beckford married Alexander Hamilton on April 26, 1810. At the time, he was known as the Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale. Their wedding took place in London.
They had two children together:
- William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton: He married Princess Marie Amelie of Baden and had children of his own.
- Lady Susan Hamilton: She married twice. She had children with her first husband, Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle. Her second marriage was to Jean Alexis Op de Beeck.
Susan's daughter, also named Susan, had some challenges in her life. She lived abroad for a period of time.
Interests and Legacy
The Duchess of Hamilton was very interested in the arts. She supported many artists and writers. One of her friends was the famous poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. She also inherited many valuable artworks from her father, William Thomas Beckford.
