Susan Montagu, also known as Lady Susan Gordon, was an important lady who lived from 1774 to 1828. She was married to William Montagu, who was the 5th Duke of Manchester.

Early Life and Family

Lady Susan was born on February 2, 1774, at Gordon Castle in Scotland. She was the third daughter of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon. Her mother was Jane Maxwell. Her mother was known for helping her children marry well.

Marriage and Children

Susan married William Montagu, the Duke of Manchester, on October 7, 1793. Their wedding took place in Edinburgh, Scotland. Together, they had eight children.

  • Lady Jane Montagu (1794–1815): She passed away without marrying.
  • George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester (1799–1855): He later became the 6th Duke.
  • Lord William Francis Montagu (1800–1842): He married Emily Du Pre and had children.
  • Lady Georgiana Frederica Montagu (1803–1892): She married Evan Baillie and had children.
  • Lady Elizabeth Montagu: She married Thomas Steele and had children, including Thomas Montagu Steele.
  • Lady Susan Montagu (around 1801–1870): She married George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale, and they had children.

Later Life

By 1808, the Duke and Duchess of Manchester lived separately. The Duke became the governor of Jamaica, while Susan stayed in Britain. They officially separated, and Susan received money to support herself. She passed away in August 1828 at Bedfont Lodge in Middlesex, England, when she was 54 years old. She was buried in Kimbolton.
