Susanne Ditlevsen facts for kids
Susanne Ditlevsen is a Danish mathematician and statistician. She studies how math and statistics can help us understand living things. Her work includes mathematical biology (using math to study biology), how we sense things (perception), and how systems change over time (dynamical systems). She also uses statistics to create models of biological systems.
Susanne Ditlevsen is a professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. There, she leads the part of the math department that focuses on statistics and probability.
Before she became a scientist, Susanne Ditlevsen was an actor! She earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) in 2004 from the University of Copenhagen. Her main research project, called a dissertation, was about using special math equations to understand how our bodies work. Her professor, Michael Sørensen, guided her research.
Achievements and Recognition
Joining Important Groups
Susanne Ditlevsen has been recognized for her important work. In 2012, she became a chosen member of the International Statistical Institute. This is a global group for statisticians.
Later, in 2016, she was also elected to the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. This is a very old and respected group in Denmark for top scientists and scholars.
Research on Climate Change
In 2023, Susanne Ditlevsen worked with her brother, Peter Ditlevsen, who is a climate scientist. They published an important article about a big ocean current system called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Their research suggested that this ocean current had a very high chance (95%) of slowing down a lot or even stopping completely between the years 2025 and 2095. They calculated that, on average, this could happen around 2057. If this "tipping point" is reached, it would cause big changes to the world's climate. Northern Europe, especially, could see major effects. You can learn more about this in the article about the effects of AMOC slowdown.
