The Susquehanna Art Museum is a special place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where you can see amazing art. It is an art museum located in the middle of Harrisburg, which is the capital city of Pennsylvania.

Discover the Susquehanna Art Museum

The Susquehanna Art Museum, often called SAM, started in 1989. A group of art teachers in central Pennsylvania had a great idea. They thought Harrisburg, the state capital, really needed its own art museum.

These teachers wanted to create a place where art could be exciting and interesting for everyone. They worked with people from the community and local businesses. Together, they made the museum a reality.

What You Can See at SAM

The museum's galleries show art from many different artists. You can see works by artists from the local area and from all over Pennsylvania. They also feature art from other parts of the United States and even from around the world!

The Susquehanna Art Museum is part of a group called the North American Reciprocal Museum Association. This means if you are a member of SAM, you might get special benefits at other museums too.

Learning and Creating Art

SAM offers many ways to learn about art. Adults can take different classes, listen to talks, and join workshops. These programs help them learn more about art history and how to create art.

For younger people, SAM has special art programs. Kids and teens can explore drawing, painting, and sculpture. They also learn about art history and how to appreciate different kinds of art.

The Museum's Home

The Susquehanna Art Museum moved to its current location on January 16, 2015. It is now in a beautifully changed building at 1401 North Third Street in Harrisburg. This building used to be called the Keystone Trust Building.

The Museum's First Home

Before moving to its current spot, the museum was in a different building. It was located in the heart of downtown Harrisburg, in a building known as the Kunkel Building. This building is also sometimes called the Feller Building.

The Kunkel Building was first built in 1913 as a bank. Later, it became a department store. Today, it is a dormitory for students at Harrisburg University. There is even a Subway restaurant on the first floor!

The Kunkel Building has a unique look with its white, shiny terracotta outside. This material makes the building stand out. In 1925, more parts were added to the back of the building, matching the original style. The Kunkel Building is an important historical site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
