Svetlana Alexandrovna Pletneva (born April 1, 1926, in Vyatka – died November 20, 2008, in Moscow) was an important Russian and Soviet archaeologist and historian. An archaeologist studies ancient times by digging up old objects and buildings. A historian studies and writes about the past.

Svetlana Pletneva was a student of Mikhail Artamonov, who was also a famous historian. She became well-known for her deep studies of ancient nomadic people in Eurasia, especially the Khazars. Nomadic people are groups who move from place to place instead of settling in one spot.

Svetlana Pletneva spent much of her life studying the history of nomadic groups in Eurasia. This large area includes parts of Europe and Asia. She wrote many books about these ancient cultures.

One of her main areas of focus was the Khazars. The Khazars were a powerful group of people who lived in Eastern Europe and Central Asia many centuries ago. Her work helped us understand more about their way of life, their history, and how they interacted with other groups.
