Sydney Courtauld was born on March 10, 1840, in Bocking, a town near Braintree in Essex, England. His parents were George Courtauld and Susanna Sewell.

On April 4, 1865, he married Sarah Lucy Sharpe in London. They had several children, including:

  • Sir William Julien Courtauld (1870–1940)
  • Sydney Renée Courtauld (1873–1962)
  • Samuel Courtauld (1876–1947), who became a famous art collector
  • Catharine Courtauld (1878–1972)
  • John Sewell Courtauld (1880–1942)
  • Sir Stephen Lewis Courtauld (1882–1967)

His Home and Hobbies

Sydney Courtauld had a house called Bocking Place built in Braintree between 1885 and 1887. It was designed by an architect named Ernest Flint. This house was special because it was one of the first buildings in Essex to have electric lighting!

He also loved gardening and was a skilled horticulturalist. This means he was very good at growing plants. He was the first person in England to successfully grow a specific type of orchid, Masdevallia costaricensis, until it flowered.

Sydney Courtauld cared about his community. On November 26, 1888, he gave the Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens to the people of Braintree. This meant everyone could enjoy the beautiful gardens.

Sydney Courtauld passed away on October 20, 1899, in Gosfield, Essex.
