Sylvester Potts was born on January 22, 1938. He went to North Eastern High School in Detroit. Other famous singers like Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson also went to this school. Sylvester loved music so much. He once said he wanted to perform on stage until his very last day.

His Music Journey

Starting in the 1950s

In the late 1950s, Sylvester Potts joined a group called The Hi-Fidelities. They released two songs, one of which, "Help Murder Police," was written by Sylvester himself. Later, in 1959, Sylvester and some friends formed a new group called The Blenders. This group soon changed its name to The Contours. His old friend, Huey Davis, also joined The Contours as their guitarist.

From the 1960s to the 1990s

Sylvester Potts became an official member of The Contours in 1961. He helped write the song "It Must Be Love," which was released in 1963.

He also co-wrote songs for other artists. In 1965, he helped write "How Can I Say I'm Sorry" for Jimmy Ruffin. The next year, he co-wrote "It Ain't Necessary" for Mamie Galore.

During the 1970s, Sylvester joined The Four Sonics. This group released one song called "There's No Love." In 1984, Sylvester rejoined The Contours, which had started performing again. He also helped arrange the singing for a song by The Monitors in 1990. In 1999, a song he produced and co-wrote, "Give It Up," was released on an album by The Temptations.

The 2000s and Beyond

In 2004, Sylvester Potts left The Contours. He then started a new group called Upscale. This group soon changed its name to The Contours. This led to some legal discussions with the original Contours group. In the end, there were two groups performing. One was called The Contours, and the other was called The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts. Even at 71 years old in 2010, Sylvester was still touring and performing with his group.

His Final Years

Sylvester Potts passed away on January 6, 2017. He was 78 years old. His funeral was held in Detroit, Michigan.
