Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Anthony "T. A." Denny (born April 2, 1818 – died December 25, 1909) was a kind-hearted Irish businessman. He made his money as a bacon merchant, and he even called himself a "pork philanthropist" because he used his wealth to help others. Even though he wasn't officially part of the Salvation Army, he gave them a lot of money to support their work. He also believed in the power of education and helped fund schools. Thomas Denny was married twice. First, in 1868, he married Mary Jane Noel. Later, in 1893, he married Elizabeth Hope, who was also a helper of others. His son, Ernest Denny, became a first-class cricket player and an officer in the British Army.

Helping Others: Thomas Denny's Story

Thomas Denny was one of a few wealthy people who helped the Salvation Army when it was just starting. The Salvation Army is a Christian organization that helps people in need, like those experiencing homelessness or poverty. In 1877, Denny attended meetings to discuss how the Salvation Army was run. Even though he didn't always agree with everything their leader, William Booth, did, he kept giving money to support their important work.

Supporting the Salvation Army

Denny's support for the Salvation Army was very important. For example, in 1881, he paid the first year's rent for their main office in London. This office was located at 101 Queen Victoria Street. He also helped the Salvation Army start its work in France. In 1882, he gave money to help pay off debts for buildings the Army used, which they called "barracks." His financial help allowed the Salvation Army to grow and reach more people.

Boosting Education

Thomas Denny also cared a lot about education. In 1890, he provided most of the money needed to build the Woolwich Polytechnic. A polytechnic is a type of school that teaches practical skills and trades. He also served as the chairman of the school's board from 1891 to 1894. His support helped many young people get a good education and learn useful skills for their future.
