Gerald Taiaiake Alfred is a writer, teacher, and activist. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1964 and grew up in Kahnawake. He is a well-known Kanien’kehá:ka professor. The Kanien’kehá:ka are also known as the Mohawk people.

Early Life and Learning

Gerald Alfred grew up in Kahnawake, a community in Quebec. He finished high school at Loyola High School in Montreal. After high school, he joined the Marine Corps and served for three years until 1984.

He then went to university to continue his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Concordia University. Later, he earned a Master of Arts degree and a Ph.D. (which is a very advanced degree) from Cornell University.

His Work and Achievements

Gerald Alfred has had an important career focused on Indigenous issues. He helped start the Indigenous Governance Program and was its first director from 1999 to 2015. This program helps teach about how Indigenous communities govern themselves.

He also received a special honor called a Canada Research Chair from 2003 to 2007. This award recognizes top researchers in Canada. He also won a National Aboriginal Achievement Award for his work in education. This award celebrates the achievements of Indigenous people in Canada.

In 2019, Gerald Alfred began working as a project manager for the Kahnawà:ke governance project. This project helps the Kahnawà:ke community manage its own affairs.

In 2023, he released his fourth book. It is called Its All About the Land: Collected Talks and Interviews on Indigenous Resurgence. This book shares his ideas about how Indigenous peoples can become stronger and more self-sufficient.
