Playing Career: From Midfielder to Leader
Takafumi Hori was born in Atsugi on September 10, 1967. After finishing his studies at Meiji University, he started his professional football career. In 1990, he joined a team called Toshiba. He quickly became a regular player, known for his skills as an offensive midfielder.
In 1992, Hori moved to Urawa Reds, a well-known club in Japan. Here, he often played as a defensive midfielder. This role meant he helped protect his team's goal. He played many matches for Urawa Reds.
Later, in 1999, he joined Bellmare Hiratsuka (which later became Shonan Bellmare). At this club, he played many games and was a key player. He helped guide the team, especially its younger players, during a time when the club faced financial challenges. Hori retired from playing football at the end of the 2001 season.
Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Victory
After his playing days, Takafumi Hori began a new chapter as a coach. He started his coaching career at Shonan Bellmare in 2002. In 2005, he moved back to Urawa Reds, where he mainly coached the youth teams.
In 2011, the main Urawa Reds team was not doing well. Their manager was replaced, and Hori stepped in as the new manager in October. He managed the team for five matches. His leadership helped the club stay in the top league, the J1 League.
From 2012, he worked as a coach under a new manager. Then, in July 2017, Hori became the manager of Urawa Reds again. This was a very successful period for the club. Under his guidance, Urawa Reds won the 2017 AFC Champions League. This was a huge achievement, as it was their first time winning this important Asian championship in 10 years! Because of this success, Hori was also named the AFC Coach of the Year in 2017.
However, the team's performance in the 2018 season was not as strong. Hori was replaced as manager in April of that year. Since then, he has continued his coaching journey, managing Tokyo Verdy from 2021 to 2022 and Vegalta Sendai in 2023. As of July 2025, he is the assistant manager for Yokohama FC.
