Talnique is a town in El Salvador. It is a municipality located in the La Libertad department. This special town is built on top of a mountain! There is only one road that leads in and out of Talnique. The people living here earn their money mainly by growing coffee and by welcoming tourists.
A Look Back in Time
The town of Talnique has a very old history. People lived here even before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas! In the year 1550, about 550 people lived in Talnique.

Talnique covers an area of about 11.5 square miles. It sits high up, at an altitude of about 2,900 feet above sea level. Every August, the people of Talnique have a special celebration. They honor Saint Luis, who was a King of France.
The name "Talnique" has an interesting meaning. It means "Hill of the Talnetes" or "The place of the wasps of the Earth." Over many years, the town's name changed several times.
- In 1548, it was called "Terlinquetepeque."
- By 1740, it was known as "San Luis Talnitepeque."
- In 1770, people called it "Talniquetet."
- Finally, in 1807, it became known as "Talnique."
