The Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI) is a special place in India that studies and improves rice. It's like a science lab for rice! TRRI is part of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). It is located in a town called Aduthurai in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu.

TRRI was started in April 1985. Its main job is to do research on rice and other crops grown with rice. It also helps coordinate all the rice research happening in the state.

The Story of TRRI

TRRI has a long history! It first began as a small research station in a place called Manganallur way back in 1912. Later, in 1922, it moved to Aduthurai and was called the Agricultural Research Station.

In 1962, its name changed again to Regional Research Station. Then, in 1973, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) started a special research center there. Finally, in 1981, these two research centers joined together. This is when they officially became the Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute.

In 1985, TRRI became an even more important part of the university. It was made a "Directorate," which means it became a main center for rice research.

What TRRI Does

TRRI has different teams that work on improving rice. These teams help farmers grow better rice and protect their crops. Here are the main teams:

  • Crop Improvement: This team works on making new and better types of rice plants. They try to create rice that grows stronger or produces more grains.
  • Crop management: This team studies the best ways to grow rice. They look at things like how much water to use or when to plant the seeds.
  • Plant Protection: This team helps protect rice plants from pests and diseases. They find ways to keep the plants healthy so farmers don't lose their crops.
