Tanglewood Mall is a shopping center located in Roanoke County, Virginia, USA. It first opened its doors on March 28, 1973. Today, Urban Retail Properties helps manage the mall.
You can find Tanglewood Mall where two main roads, US 220 and Route 419, meet. It's also near the end of the Roy L. Weber Expressway.
How Tanglewood Mall Started
Planning for Tanglewood Mall began in 1969, and building started in 1971. When the mall opened in 1973, it had several big stores called "anchor stores." These were J. C. Penney, Leggett (which is now Belk), Woolco, Miller & Rhoads, and G.C. Murphy.
The inside of the mall looked very modern for its time. It had dark wood floors, tinted glass, and cool lighting. There were even three large fountains! In 1975, a nearby shopping area opened with a Kroger grocery store and a General Cinema movie theater.
Changes Over the Years
G.C. Murphy left the mall in 1979. After that, its upper floor became a food court, where you could buy different kinds of food. The lower floor was turned into smaller shops.
Woolco closed its store in 1983. That space was then changed to make room for a Brendle's catalog showroom, a T. J. Maxx, and more small shops. The mall also had a special area called the French Quarter. It was designed to look like a French village with unique stores and restaurants.
In 1985, the mall got a new look. Many of the 1970s decorations were removed. The mall was updated with softer colors and Mediterranean-style tiles. A new elevator was also added for shoppers.
Miller & Rhoads closed in 1989, and its space was divided into smaller stores. Goody's Family Clothing opened in 1995 in the old French Quarter area. Stein Mart also joined the mall that same year.
A 10-screen movie theater opened outside the mall in 1998. In 2005, a special exhibit called "Baby Dinosaurs at the Mall" came to Tanglewood, which was a part of a Roanoke Science museum.
J. C. Penney announced in 2017 that they would close their Tanglewood Mall store. It officially closed on July 31, 2017. Later, in 2019, Carilion Clinic announced they would use the old J. C. Penney space.
A.C. Moore, a craft store, opened in 2006. However, they closed their Tanglewood Mall location in April 2019. Soon after, Michaels, another craft store, bought the A.C. Moore space. In August 2020, Stein Mart also announced they would be closing all their stores, including the one at Tanglewood Mall.
Modern Updates and Renovations
From 2005 to 2007, Tanglewood Mall went through big renovations. The goal was to make space for new stores and give the mall a fresh, new look both inside and out.
T. J. Maxx moved into the old Brendle's space after it was updated. Other new stores, like Staples, also opened. Steve and Barry's, a clothing store, opened in 2006. It took up a large area, including part of the old T.J. Maxx space and the food court.
Some food court tenants, like Chick-fil-A, moved to new spots within the mall. Kroger, the grocery store outside the mall, also updated its building. These changes helped Tanglewood Mall look new and offer more to its visitors.
