Tap changer facts for kids
A tap changer is a special part found inside a transformer. Think of a transformer as a device that changes the strength of electricity. The tap changer's job is to control the electricity's voltage (how strong it is) that comes out of the transformer. It does this by changing how the wires are connected inside, a bit like choosing different gears on a bike.
Tap changers can work in two main ways. Some can change the voltage while the electricity is still flowing, these are called On-Load Tap Changers (OLTC). Others can only change the voltage when the transformer is turned off, and these are known as Off-Circuit Tap Changers (OCTC).

How a Tap Changer Works
A transformer has coils of wire, like spools. When electricity goes into one coil, it creates electricity in another coil. The number of turns in these coils affects the output voltage. A tap changer works by changing the number of active turns in one of these coils.
Imagine you have a long wire with several connection points, or "taps," along its length. The tap changer moves to connect to different points on this wire. When it connects to a different tap, it changes how many turns of wire are used. This small change then adjusts the final voltage that the transformer sends out.
Types of Tap Changers
There are two main types of tap changers, depending on when they can be used:
On-Load Tap Changers (OLTC)
An On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC) can change the voltage while the transformer is still working and sending out electricity. This is very useful because it means power doesn't have to be shut off to adjust the voltage. OLTCs are often used in power grids to keep the voltage stable, even when the demand for electricity changes. They can adjust the voltage automatically.
Off-Circuit Tap Changers (OCTC)
An Off-Circuit Tap Changer (OCTC) is different. It can only change the voltage when the transformer is completely turned off and disconnected from the power supply. This type is simpler and less expensive than an OLTC. OCTCs are usually set once during installation or when major changes are needed. They are not used for frequent voltage adjustments.
Why Tap Changers Are Important
Tap changers are very important for making sure our homes and businesses get the right amount of electricity. If the voltage is too high, it can damage appliances. If it's too low, appliances might not work correctly. Tap changers help keep the voltage steady and safe for everyone using electricity.
