The building in 2012

The building once known as the Tarantella Night Club is a very old and important building. It is located on Mouat Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area in Western Australia. This building was built around the time of the gold rush (late 1800s and early 1900s). It has a lot of history and is a special part of Fremantle's past.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The Tarantella building has a unique look, especially for Fremantle. It uses a lot of stone and a style called Federation Romanesque. This is different from many other buildings in Fremantle, which often have smooth, decorated walls.

Key Features of Its Design

The building takes up its whole plot of land. It stands alone, with small paths or laneways on either side. It has a narrow front and a very steep, pointed roof. A tower with a castle-like top and a pointed, tiled roof makes it look even taller.

The front of the building is split into three main parts. It has rounded arches on the ground floor and above the windows on the upper floors. The front is mostly made of rough, natural limestone rock. You can also see other stone details. Dark blue stone columns and bases are used on the ground floor. Stone brackets support a decorative line of stone above the first floor. The pointed roof area also has a decorative arch design.

A Look Back: The Building's History

The plans for this building were created in 1902 by an architect named Edward Herbert Dean Smith. They were made for William De Lacey Bacon, who wanted offices and a warehouse. Bacon had bought the land in 1901.

When Was It Built?

This three-story stone building was finished in 1903. It was ready for its first tenants that same year.

Early Businesses and Uses

The first business to move into the building was L. Ratazzi & Company. They were general merchants who sold wine and spirits. They also represented a German shipping company called Norddeutscher Lloyd Imperial German Mail Steamers.

Laurman Ratazzi, who ran the company, was also the German Consul. This meant he represented Germany in Fremantle. Later, he became the Italian Consul. During World War I, Ratazzi's company stopped operating.

Changes Over the Years

After the war, different shipping companies used the building. In 1951, a company called Dickenson's Transport Agency bought and used it. Then, in 1971, L.H. & A.E. Webb became the owners.

In 1984, two people named Jose Faria and Jose Rebelo leased the building. They opened the Tarantella night club there. To make space for the club, they removed some internal walls on the ground floor. This created a large open area for dancing and a bar.

In 1986, Joe Faria and Joe Rebelo bought the building. The nightclub continued to operate. In 1992, another company, Fabray Pty Ltd, bought the building. The Tarantella night club closed its doors on February 13, 1993. After that, the building was changed to be used as homes.
