Kids Encyclopedia Facts

In Inuit mythology, the Tariaksuq is a mysterious creature. It is often described as a humanoid, meaning it looks like a human. These beings are linked to shadows, invisibility, and things that are hard to see. The word Tariaksuq (plural: Tariaksuit) means "Shadow-People."

What is a Tariaksuq?

The Tariaksuq is said to be very much like a regular human being. They live in houses, have families, and use tools and weapons, just like people do. However, there is one big difference: you cannot see them by looking straight at them.

How They Appear

When you try to look directly at a Tariaksuq, one of two things might happen:

  • They might disappear into a different world. This world exists separately from our own.
  • You might only see their shadow. It's like they are there, but only their shadow is visible.

A Tariaksuq only becomes fully visible if it is killed. When this happens, they are said to look like a creature that is half-human and half-caribou. This makes them very unique among mythical beings.

Hunting Habits

Tariaksuit have a special way of hunting. They can only catch their prey when they are hunting on foot. This means they cannot use other methods, like traps or boats, to get their food. This unique hunting style is another interesting fact about these shadow-people.
