Tarō Gomi (五味 太郎, Gomi Taro) was born in Chofu, Tokyo, Japan, on August 20, 1945. He is a famous Japanese writer and illustrator of children's books. He is known for creating many, many books for kids.
Meet Tarō Gomi
Tarō Gomi is one of Japan's most active and well-known children's book creators. He writes the stories and draws the pictures for his books. He studied at the Kuwazawa Design Institute, where he learned about art and design.
His very first picture book for children came out in 1973. Since then, he has published over 400 books in Japan! His books are so popular that they have been translated into many different languages around the world.

This award is given to outstanding children's books that were first published in a language other than English in another country. It shows how much his work is appreciated around the world.
