Team Seas, also known as #TEAMSEAS, was a big international project to raise money. It was started by two famous YouTubers, MrBeast and Mark Rober. This project followed their earlier successful fundraiser, Team Trees. Team Seas managed to collect over 33 million U.S. dollars!
All the money donated to Team Seas goes to two important groups: the Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Cleanup. These groups share the donations to help clean up our oceans. The goal of Team Seas was to remove 30 million pounds (about 13.6 million kg) of trash from the ocean. They promised to remove one pound of trash for every dollar donated. As of early 2023, they had raised more than $33 million.
Why Team Seas Started
Before Team Seas, MrBeast and Mark Rober started another project called Team Trees. That fundraiser began on October 25, 2019. Their goal was to raise 20 million dollars to plant trees, and they reached it! Even when Team Seas started, people could still donate to Team Trees, and updates on tree planting were shared on their website.
Team Seas was created to tackle a different problem: the huge amount of trash in our oceans. The creators wanted to make a big difference by cleaning up beaches and removing plastic from the sea.
How Team Seas Spread
Team Seas aimed to remove 30 million pounds (about 13.6 million kg) of marine debris (trash in the ocean) by the end of 2021. They planned to do this by raising 30 million dollars, with one pound of trash removed for every dollar donated.
The project was launched all over the internet on Friday, October 29, 2021, at 1 PM Pacific Time. Many people helped spread the word:
- YouTube: Thousands of video creators from 145 different countries made videos about Team Seas. Together, these creators had over 1 billion followers! Most of them explained what Team Seas was about and asked their viewers to donate. Some added a short part about it in their videos.
- TikTok: Videos on TikTok also had a special button that allowed people to donate directly to the campaign.
On the launch day, MrBeast released a video showing his team cleaning very polluted beaches in Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic. They worked as volunteers for the Ocean Conservancy. Mark Rober also released a video on the same day, which he filmed with The Ocean Cleanup group.
Big donations also helped the project grow. On November 1, 2021, Tobi Lütke, who is the CEO of a company called Shopify, donated $1,200,001. This was even more than the $1,000,001 he had donated to Team Trees!
